DHEA, Testosterone, & Estrogen: How Meditation Boosts Sex Drive Hormones
Low DHEA, Low Sex-Drive
Beginning around 25, like an hourglass running out of sand, our DHEA levels drop every year. Serving as a precursor for both testosterone and estrogen, DHEA is very important to the libido of both men and women.
In fact, the decline of this hormone is so predictable and consistent that doctors use it as a kind of “true age” biomarker, a far more precise way of measuring the exact toll father time has taken on our body.
When our DHEA levels begin their slow, agonizing decline, so do the levels of testosterone (for men) and estrogen (for women). Ever wonder why your libido and sexual performance are not the same as 10 or 20 years ago?
The Problem With DHEA Supplementation
Then, to solve this rubix cube, why not just get a bottle of DHEA capsules? Because poor marksmanship. That is, within the human body at least, orally ingested DHEA has problems hitting its target.
For women, instead of estrogen, DHEA supplements get overly converted into testosterone. For men, instead of testosterone, orally ingested DHEA often finds itself being converted into the metabolite DHT. These results are a bit puzzling because testing on animals often yields good results.
While we will not dive into the consequences of these unintended side effects, DHEA supplementation's risks far outweigh the rewards — at least according to many doctors.
Even if DHEA supplementation worked as well as advertised, dependency on a bottle of pills is not cool. Luckily there is a better way.
Uncap Your DHEA Through Meditation
Then, what's the best solution? You. We each have within us the capacity to crank up our internal pharmacy, self-generating DHEA from the inside-out.
And sitting atop the list of natural ways to uncap the old DHEA firehose? Meditation.
Dr. Vincent Giampapa, M.D., former President of the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine and current prominent longevity researcher, discovered that meditators' DHEA levels were higher by at least 40%!
In addition to healthy levels of testosterone for men and estrogen for women, DHEA increases your sex drive in other more indirect yet (perhaps) equally powerful ways.
For instance, DHEA is often called the "mother of all hormones" because it is so critical for overall mental, emotional, and physical well being. Of course, feeling young, happy and healthy are very important to feeling sexually desirable.
Is meditation the sexual fountain of youth? The evidence certainly makes a strong case.
Meditation, The Relaxation Response, & Becoming A "Super-Lovemaker"
How Fight Or Flight Mode Torpedoes Sex Drive
Think back to the last time you felt nervous. Your heart was racing, your palms were sweaty, your muscles were tense, your breathing was short, your hands and feet were cold… and sex was the last thing on your mind.
When we are stressed, our major organs hoard blood to continue working properly, diverting precious energy and resources away from less core bodily systems (like reproduction).
Now, the problem with "fight or flight" mode is that while it’s meant to work temporarily, many of us get stuck here. Our survival modes were not designed to be on constant alert.
Why So Many Of Us Are Stuck In Survival Mode
Instead of escaping lions, tigers, and bears, we are accidentally tripping our primal fear instincts through non-life or death situations: job stress, relationship stress, financial stress, etc.
Does it matter that we self-create many of these problems, blowing them way out of proportion? Not really.
Libido takes a back seat even if our so called "impending doom" is not real. A turtle, when scared, will stay in his shell.
Thankfully, legendary Harvard University physician Herbert Benson has discovered the kryptonite for non-stop stress mode.
By dramatically reducing the stress hormone cortisol and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the legendary doctor discovered that meditation turns on what he coined the "relaxation response."
Meditative Superhuman Sex Feats
However, meditation's effect goes far beyond deep relaxation. In fact, another study by Dr. Benson found that meditating monks could increase the temperature of their fingers and toes by as much as 17°F, while drying wet blankets through mental control of their body heat!
While no formal studies have been done (that we know of!) on being able to consciously redirect energy and bloodflow to other *ahem* parts of the body (!), there are definitely ancient disciplines built up around this very concept (like tantric yoga).
At the very least, you don’t need to be a meditative mind master to revolutionize your libido and sexual performance. Countless beginners report excellent results in the lovemaking department shortly after beginning a regimen.
Endorphins: Why Runners & Meditators Love To Make Love
Running Into The Bedroom
If a poll were held today for the world’s most popular exercise, jogging would runaway with the prize. It also happens to be a very powerful endorphin booster. Ever hear of “runner’s high?”
In addition to being present during sexual arousal and even orgasm, these euphoric, pain-killing, feel-great neurotransmitters have been proven to slay the two most notorious sex drive killers — anxiety and depression.
Many folks are addicted to the pavement because they feel so amazing afterward. Runners are great in bed too, at least according to one 2015 study published in PLOS-One journal.
So, what does all this have to do with meditation? Well, you don’t need to be a treadmill addicted gym rat to charge your body full of these sex-drive boosters. There is another way.
Meditation's Sexy Endorphins
After testing 11 elite runners and 12 meditators, a 1995 study (Biological Psychology Journal) found that meditation and running had very similar endorphin boosting effects!
It might sound crazy to think that mindfulness can have such a powerful physiological effect on the body, but meditators have known and understood for millennia the true power contained within this incredible state of consciousness. When it comes to meditation's countless benefits, science is just now catching up to speed.
If you want to upgrade your lovemaking physiology and psychology, then run into the bedroom with meditation.
How A Focused, Quiet Mind Makes You A Better Lover
What Exactly Is Libido?
We can thank the legendary 19th century founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, for introducing us to the concept of libido.
A very important distinction, Freud made clear that libido was not our ability to engage in sexual activity, but the "underlying emotional and psychological energies which ultimately lead to arousal."
This line in the sand is important because it is only when we get under the hood of our mind do we discover the true mechanisms behind sexual arousal or lack thereof.
The Three Horseman Of Low Libido
Then, if healthy mental processes ignite and fuel our sex drive, what are the most common blockages?
The biggest would be stress, which is the main precursor to the three horseman of low libido: anxiety, depression, and mental distraction.
Depression and anxiety sufferers know all too well the discomfort and sadness associated with daily life. The “hamster wheel” of anxious, negative thoughts have an uncanny ability to keep us in perpetual “monkey mind” distracted mode.
This mental bombardment leads to less enjoyment and interest in the things which once created happiness. Like sex.
How Meditation Brings Sexy Back
Luckily, meditation tackles stress, anxiety, depression, and distraction from a variety of angles. Here are a few ways this is done:
Meditation activates the coolest parts of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex, while deactivating the stress center amygdala.
While depression shrinks the brain’s hippocampus, meditation reverses this process — building it right back up.
Mindfulness quiets down the so called "monkey mind," getting us off the "hamster wheel" of anxiety.
Instead of your mind wandering to the million things bugging you, meditation keeps you focused on the task at hand (like loving your partner).
Meditators are the world's deepest sleepers. Great sleep every night of the week allows the body to refresh and rujevenate itself from the daily stresses we all face.
